Recently, we've committed ourselves to two new goals: keeping watches where they belong—on wrists, not in landfills—and having 50% sustainably sourced watches by 2026. And in honor of Earth Day, we're excited to share some of the steps we've been taking to make this happen.
We launched the world's first circular program for watches:
In 2023, we introduced Timex ReWound, a program that allows you to send us any used watch from any brand so that it can enjoy a second life with someone new or be upcycled into new products. Since its introduction,12,477 watches have been saved from landfills.

Taking a more eco-friendly approach to watchmaking:
From solar movements powered by any light source to vegan leather straps crafted from apple peels; we are constantly looking for new ways to bring you watches that are equal parts environmentally friendly and beautifully crafted. Here are some of the planet-friendly materials we've been using in our watches:

Solar-Powered & Mechanical Movements: Solar-powered movements convert any form of light into electrical energy, powering your watch for up to 4 months, while hand-wound and automatic movements are powered by you. This means one less battery for you to worry about changing and one less battery ending up in our landfills.

Recycled Plastic: Post-consumer plastic waste is upcycled into our eco-friendly watch parts—such as fabric straps—rather than ending up in our oceans and landfills.

#tide™ Ocean Material: In a partnership with #tide™, we're working to clean our oceans by upcycling ocean-bound plastic into watch parts. Fishermen collect plastic from the coastlines; the waste is washed and shredded before making its way to Switzerland via carbon-neutral transportation; and finally, it’s repurposed on-site, resulting in a premium, sustainable material. This material is then used to make the cases, dials, and bracelets of our Timex Legacy Ocean collection.

Ecco DriTan™ Leather Straps: The waterless leather tanning techniques used in the making of our Ecco DriTan™ leather straps save 6.6 million gallons of fresh water each year.

Apple Leather Straps: Pulp and peels from fruit juice production that are normally discarded are collected and mixed with PU to produce a leather-like material, offering a vegan alternative that provides the same classic style, quality, and comfort of a natural leather strap. Wheat Husk Straps: Crafted from bio-based resin made with wheat fiber, this innovative type of strap provides the same comfort and durability as a traditional resin strap but has a much smaller carbon footprint thanks to its partly organic makeup.

Eco-ceramic: This innovative and sturdy material is made from a blend of ceramic and bio-based resin derived from castor plants. The case of our Expedition North® Traprock is made with this durable material.
