“Random Readings on Heart Monitor”

Rated 1 / 5

Review:

I asked for this watch to help train using my heart rate. Unfortunately, the heart rate monitor is somewhat random. At age 49, I try to keep my heart rate @ 130 bpm for runs and biking. The monitor has recorded rates over 200 bpm. The last time was 170 bpm, but when I took my pulse manually it was 120 bpm. I wouldn't recommend this watch - perhaps other Timex versions work better, but this one is disappointing.

“excellent performance tool”

Review:

I've had my Timex Race Trainer for 1 year. This is an excellent device for monitoring your training and racing performance.

In addition to the HRM and stopwatch functions, I use the multiple alarms, and the interval timers. When doing intervals, I like the display of the split time and split HR average.

I just replaced the chest strap battery after 350 hours, which I consider to be a good duration. My previous Polar HRM I could not replace the battery ($40+ for a strap with new sealed battery).

After one year the wristband is in like new condition, the chest strap elastic is starting to show some wear.

I download my exercise data and review it using Training Peaks. This has really shown me the benefit of focused training through phases of build, peak, taper, and recovery. This automatically logs my workouts which is a great convenience, motivator and tool for improvement.

If you are serious about improving your endurance and fitness, I recommend this device. You might also have an LT test conducted by a certified coach. Or you can determine your LT by using this device for a do-it-yourself 'field test'.
