Love the watch, hate the band

  • I love this watch! Here's the problem: after about 2 years, I need a new band. Stores who sell the bands don't have this one and no one seems to know where I can get it. Is there a replacement band? I'd love to keep using the watch, but the strap is broken.

    band is hard to replace

I'd love to give it a higher rating, but loses it's appeal when I can't replace a worn out band/strap. It shouldn't be so difficult to find a strap. It would be helpful if straps were sold on your website AND if the replacement band number was listed somehow on the product information page.

    Great watch, bad band

  • I think this is a great watch. I love Timex and its products. They are reliable and efficient. Ive been in the Military since 1997, and Timex was my first watch. I still have it. I needed a watch with a digital compass since I didnt wnt to get lost in Iraq or Afg. Only Con is its Band. Im calling the comp to gt a replcmt.

    Excellent Watch, Poor Band

  • The watch itself is perfect, never had a problem with it, its lasted me so far 3 years, maybe more, the ONLY thing i dont like about it, is the band, i had to replace the band twice, its not great with water, after time the band starts to fall apart. (Im a lifeguard, so im in the water constantly, if your not in the water that much, it might last u a bit longer) Other than that, i give the watch itself 5 stars,

Good working watch, band not so much

  • I purchased this watch back in 2006 and have worn it everywhere while doing everyday stuff: Work, while doing construction and while doing some intense gardening. The watch has been under water a number of times, but now the band is falling apart and like everyone else, I can't find a replacement band. I will call Timex customer service to see if I can buy one from Timex directly. Love the compass feature!

    not recommended

  • This is the third timex watch (different models)with a digital compass I've purchased. the first two went back nearly immediately as they were about as accurate as my best guess where north was. this model is slightly better than that but needs to be recalibrated quite often. The band started to come apart after about 1 month and now is almost unuseable. In fact I am writing this review due to the fact that it appears that a new band is not offered for it (how that is possible I have no idea). I would strongly recomend you look elsewhere for a watch of this type. I purchased this model because it's size is much more reasonable than the higher priced compass type watches (which I've also owned) but it now appears it is going in the trash. I think I'm giving up on a compass on my wrist.

  • Just wanted to join the list, nice watch but the band went to pieces in about 6 months and a replacement would be nice since you cant find one in stores. And one other minor annoyance...when hitting the function button it tends to go more than one function per press.

    rugged appearance, not performance

  • Unlike another reviewer, my "combat watch" didn't make it through basic training. A watch advertised and engraved with the claim of "water resistant to 100 meters" should be able to withstand a light handwashing. Mine didn't, and the display got all cloudy and unreadable. I love all the useful features of this watch, but what good are they if you can't read the display? How can I risk taking it to combat if it cannot stand up to the rigors of normal, everyday use? In addition, the rugged appearance did not amount to rugged performance. The Compass bezel quickly wore out; it wouldn't stay in place and became difficult to rotate. Considering all the complaints about the wristband (which I understand is being corrected), it is ironic that all my watch was good for was as a decorative wristband! Whatever you do, don't take one of these unreliable watches on an "Expedition" where you might really need it to live up to its name. I'm sending mine in for warranty service. Maybe I just got a bad one. Update to follow.

Performance, not water resistant, "compass" bezel is flimsy

I have had great experience with the Ironman series of watches, but the Expedition Compass watch let me down when I really needed it. I would expect more consistent quality throughout products within a similar price range.

On my 3rd band, ordered by phone, info here!

  • Great watch, I've replaced the battery several times over the years, which is to be expected. But the band DOES flake out, and I don't bother with the original plastic buckle version anymore; instead I've switched over to a Velcro version and am ordering my 3rd band now from customer service. Call the nice lady at 1-800-448-4639 and ask for part #42691. I kept my old order number and she found all the shipping info for me - awesome. For $10 including shipping I should have a nice new watchband in "10-14 working days". Seriously beats hassling with the dont-knows in the watch dept.

    Good watch, weak band

  • I have, at present, three Timex watches. In all cases, the band wears out WAY before the watch. I have two Expedition watches that I really like; they are feature-rich, durable, easy to understand and use. BUT the watch bands wear out and break and I can't find suitable replacements. The after-market bands that say they are for these watches are unsuitable and don't fit right. Please, Timex make replacement bands for these good watches; I'm currently wearing one that the band is barely holding together, while two others are just sitting on my dresser taking up space.

Got better as I used more features

  • The compass caught my eye. I like interesting features that other watches don't have. When I need a new watch, I always get something different. Style and beauty count too. This watch has a very good mixture. Setting the compass required a little work on my part, but once set it has worked flawlessly. The timer feature next became more and more useful, followed be the Alarms 1,2 & 3. I am one that reads manuals and tries out features. Several more to try, but even with what I've used, it was a good buy.

    Worst Band Ever!!!

  • I purchased the watch prior to reading reviews (bad move). The band reminds me of stuff that engineers designed in the 70's/80's-it'll go bad only in a matter of short time and they'll have to buy a new one. Love the watch, want a new, improved band-period.

    .Worn all the time

Quality, band has got to go

THE BAND BIT THE DUST IN A MATTER OF MONTHS. IF I PURCHASE A WATCH, I EXPECT BETTER QUALITY. SO NO, I'D TELL FOLKS TO STAY AWAY BECAUSE OF THE BAND. I'M A HUNTER, I LOVE THE WATCH BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE BAND AFTER ONLY BEING A FEW MONTHS OLD, IT'S PATHETIC.

    Great watch + Weak/Unique Band = Junk

  • I love the watch, unique and rich set functions, reliable and looks good! However, the band (which looks great initially) starts to fray within a year and then breaks. I could deal with that but I find no reference to the rather uniquely fitted band for possible replacement even on this listing for the watch at the Timex site. Unfortunately, that makes this watch practically worthless after a year or so.

    Compass Watch

  • I bought this watch four years ago in Havasu, Arizona. It has given great service - I prefer it to two expensive watches that were given to me later. Of special appeal are the clear and easy to read numbers. I have no difficulty reading informatioin in low to no light, with or without glasses. The original leather wristband wore out quickly due to hard wear but the plastic replacement is lasting well. Batteries give long life. I am completely happy with this product.

Band is fine, watch is great!

  • I went looking for this watch online because I have one and my wife wants a women's version of the same thing. I saw all the poor reviews and wondered what all the complaining was about. I love this watch - it has all the features I can think of plus the Timex reliability. The band has been fine for me, no problems whatsoever. I've had it for 8 months now, and it's worn in as much as you'd expect for an 8-month old leather/cloth band. I have no complaints whatsoever and would enthusiastically recommend it to friends - and my wife!

    Tough as Nails

  • Yes, the band is poorly designed. Like the other reviewers stated, the cloth frayed on it, and the loops to tuck the tail into broke. However, I have been wearing this watch day in and day out for two years now, and the watch itself is as tough as they come. I would love an altimeter, but for the price, you can't beat this watch for everyday use. Obviously, I'll wear a different watch for dress occasions due to the unsightly band on this one! And how can there not be a replacement band?! Come on, Timex, you're better than that!

    Great watch...HORRIBLE band

  • I got this watch as a gift and i loved it. I spend alot of time in the field studying birds and this watch comes in so handy. I would use the counter to count down 5 minutes when i do my point count surveys for birds. I would use the hydrate counter to remind me to drink water ever so often when i am working out at the gym. It was so handy....until the band broke. The cloth on the leather started fraying not long after i got it but i never minded too much because the watch itself was so useful...but then the band broke. I actually came to TIMEX.COM to see if i could get a replacement band because i searched everywhere else for it. It was while here at TIMEX i realised how many persons are saying the same thing about the band. Great Watch....HORRIBLE band....avoid this watch.

    Proprietary watchband!?!

  • Love the watch, but the band...well, it started falling apart within a month. I trimmed off all the fraying fabric inlay and lived with just leather (or pleather?) for almost 2 years. Eventually, the band broke at the hole I need to secure it, so I removed it. The band is held in with two screws for each end, it does not use spring posts like 99.99% of the watches in the world, the band is proprietary. Once it fails, you cannot replace the band from the rack at any department or jewelery store. For this reason alone I would NOT recommend buying this watch. I think that because of the bubble level at 12-o'clock position, they could not use spring posts, so they came up with a unique band design that was attractive, inexpensive, and somewhat thoughtless. The only plus I can think of for this band is that it is much more secure than spring posts. Maybe it they included adaptors to use a standard replacement watchband, but they do not. In my perfect world, I would have tried to design it to accept standard bands by moving the attachment point away 1/4" or so, then replaced the springposts with a single long screw that goes through the watch, through the band, then into the opposite end of the watch.

Too expensive for a watch that is useless after the proprietaty band fails. Other brands use standard size watchbands, availible for under $9 everywhere in countless styles and sizes.

    So So

  • Like everyone else has been saying...this does not live up to anyone's expectations. I work as a canoe/kayak guide in MN and WI and my watch band disintegrated in less than a year. Right now it's permanently on my wrist held together by string and duct tape until I can order a replacement. The watch itself works well but why wouldn't they put a higher quality band on and one that isn't so hard to find a replacement for? NOT worth the $75 price tag.
